Thermoelectricity

Thermoelectric generators are devices that are able to convert heat energy into electrical energy. Computer servers are some of the largest sources of waste heat in the modern world, harnessing this not only reduces the energy need to cool these systems and potentially produces a useful resource. By examining the thermoelectric properties, we are able to understand the key factors that give high efficiency materials that can be integrated into functional devices.

Molecular Conductance

Molecular conductance is the study of how electrons/holes are able to traverse individual molecules. We use techniques such as conductive STM, AFM or mechanical break junctions to probe this, examining the effects of quantum interference to design and produce systems that are highly conductive or responsive to external stimuli with the ultimate goal of producing functional devices.

Iridium complex photochemistry

Organometallic iridium(III) complexes form a large family of often very emissive materials. They also tend to be very modular, consisting of one or more ligands that can be replaced and modified to drastically change their photochemical behaviour, we have taken advantage of this to control emission colour, lifetime and make triplet sensitizers than can be added to any comparable system.
